Furnaces & Atmospheres for Today's Technology

June 15-16, 2010

The Furnaces & Atmospheres for Today's Technology event is held every year for industry professionals to present the latest improvements in heat treat furnaces. The event provides basic, practical information for individuals new to heat treat responsibilities or planning to buy new or used equipment. Please note: Answers published here are general in nature and not intended to be applicable in every situation. The latest design, materials and equipment specifications should be considered as changes may occur due to product or service improvement. Call SECO/WARWICK for more information.

Vacuum Furnaces

Q.  How long does it take to pump down for a leak rate test?

A.  Usually, around 15-20 minutes, for more information, please refer to the following links:

Bulk Gases - Answer by Bob Esper, Praxair

Q. What are the typical grades of nitrogen purity for heat treatment?

A.  Typically, standard industrial grade nitrogen, 99.998%, is the right choice:

  • PPraxair Q & A Bulk Gases Membrane Methodurity Specification:  >99.998%
  • Moisture: <4 ppm
  • Oxygen: <8 ppm

Q. The membrane method - how hard is it to maintain?

A. Membrane systems are very robust. Typically a membrane bundle will last indefinitely unless fouled by a hydrocarbon in the air. Membranes do not require maintenance other than for the air moving equipment that push air through the membrane bundle.

Generated Gases

Q. What happens when the chemistry changes in the natural gas?

A.  During a cold spell in the winter months, peak shaving is used to stretch the natural gas supply for the duration of the cold spell.  Continuous peak shaving may result in poor performance and soot formation in the retorts of atmosphere generator combustion chambers and coolers.

Heat Transfer

Q.  How do you determine load temperature inside the furnace?

A.  Load thermocouples; there is a methology that varies with processes and load configurations, here are two examples from aluminum furnaces:

Aluminum Coil Annealing
