Vacuum Hot Zones and Heating Elements
How is the temperature uniformity in your vacuum
furnace? Typically, vacuum furnaces lose uniformity when
heat loss occurs, or an element goes bad. Poor
temperature uniformity will produce unequal heating of the load, and
poor quality product.
When you suspect that you have temperature uniformity
problems, contact SECO/WARWICK. If
you are not in the market for new equipment, SECO/WARWICK can provide
replacement hot zones and heating elements for a wide variety of
vacuum furnace configurations including horizontal, vertical and
elevator hearth designs with metallic or graphite heating
elements.
Vacuum Hot Zones
Proper design and material selection are critical in
the development of a uniform hot zone for vacuum heat treatment.
Radiation shields can be produced of metal sheet and/or ceramic,
carbon or graphite material. Metal radiation shields, including stainless steel and
refractory metal (typically molybdenum, tantalum or tungsten), minimize surface
area for high speed pumping and deep vacuum. Fiber shields,
including ceramic fiber and graphite rigid fiberboard provide low cost, long life
and high thermal efficiency.
Metal Elements
Metallic elements (MO, Ta, W, NiCr, FeCrAl) are
available in strip, wide band or rod form. Nickel and iron based
alloys exhibit excellent oxidation resistance making them useful for
hot wall type furnaces. These alloys permit hot air
release/backfill, and typically accepted operating temperatures to
21000F. Molybdenum and other refractory metal
elements provide for operation to 24000F in standard
designs, and 30000F for special applications.

Graphite Elements
Rod, tube, bar, plate or circular graphite heating
elements provide economy as well as excellent service life.
Graphite heating elements are used for standard temperature
applications of 24000F/13150C as well as in
higher applications of 40000F/22040C
without distortion or loss of shape. Graphite heating elements
exhibit low contact resistance at internal connections and power feed-throughs,
and are easy to maintain and replace. Combined with lightweight,
graphite fiberboard shields, there is virtual elimination of hot zone
distortion.
