SECO/WARWICK's story begins at the turn of the century with the Chicago Flexible Shaft Company who manufactured non-electric horse clipping machines, sheep shearing machines, hand clippers and flexible shafts used to drive grinders and drills. The furnace part of the business developed from the necessity to harden
the blades and combs used in the shearing tools to give them a reasonable
service life. For the first ten years, the sales of heat treatment furnaces were
the result of a
customer-manufacturing convenience. The company was in the center of a
large number of small manufacturing plants on the near north side of the Chicago River.
Bicycle-making firms, cutlery houses, packaging plants, building hardware
establishments, auto accessory parts makers, wagon builders, harness equipment
fabricators, and machine shops were in the habit of asking the company to design,
to improvise, or adapt a heat-treating process for their particular needs. The company would welcome the opportunity to experiment until
they came up with an improved or more adaptable model for their neighbors.
From these humble beginnings, a furnace
division was created that has prospered in a climate of change and dynamic industrial progress. As we continue to grow and evolve as a company, we remain committed to our core values of delivering the finest quality heat processing equipment in every market segment that we serve.
