Therm-Tech of Waukesha, WI provides high quality, quick
turn-around heat treating services to a diverse customer
group. An ISO9001:2000 certified commercial heat treater,
Therm-Tech set a corporate goal to achieve H-13 certifications
for both General Motors and Ford Motor Company as part of their
continuous improvement planning process. Specifically, the
goal was to earn certification for the GM Die Insert Material and Heat Treat Specification,
and the Ford Die Insert Material and Heat Treating Performance
Requirement Specification.
To achieve this goal, Therm-Tech purchased a 5,000 pound
capacity, 10 BAR High Pressure Quench Furnace from SECO/WARWICK
and began testing H-13 materials. The test itself is run
on a 16 inch cube piece of H-13. The purpose of the test
is to evaluate if a supplier can meet the Ford/GM quench rates,
hardness specification and develop specific metallurgical
properties. First, test coupons are machined from the
block and vacuum heat treated. The block is processed with
additional test coupons welded to it. Both the test
coupons and block itself are then analyzed to see if they meet
the specification.
The SECO/WARWICK Furnace, model 10.VPT 4050/48, features a
36" x 32" x 48" hot zone and a 5,000 pound load
capacity, with a maximum operating temperature of 24000F.
The furnace is equipped with isothermic cooling and an automated
control system that provides a precise heat/cooling profile for
optimum uniformity and distortion control. The test
results on the H-13 test block heat treated in this furnace at a
cooling pressure of 10 BAR abs. (9 BAR overpressure) indicate a
significantly higher rate of cooling than required by NADCA
recommendations. Therm-Tech has received their final
certification from Ford and the GM test is pending final
approval.
This accomplishment allows Therm-Tech to be a full-fledged
supplier to the H-13 automotive market. "We realize
that family owned and operated heat treating companies are
becoming rare," says Mary Wiberg Springer. "Our
market is very competitive. We have several large
conglomerate heat treaters in our region, but we are not daunted
by this because we know that the best treating will be done by
the best heat treaters. The market for good quality and
service will always be full of opportunity." Therm-Tech
is a world class company that will do what it takes to serve
customers in this demanding market. For more information
